Tell Us About Yourself Icebreaker

Submitted by Svenja Hansen, Georgian Bay Islands National Parks of Canada.

All participants are given one of the pieces of paper to write down:

  • their favourite colour and three words that describe the colour;
  • their favourite animal (wild or domestic) and three words that describe it; and
  • their favourite place (ideally national park, historic site or canal) and three words that describe it.

As an example, my favourite colour is white and three words to describe it are cool, quiet, and peaceful. Give the group 5 minutes to write down their responses. Once everyone has finished, explain to them that each colour, animal and place is supposed to tell us something about them.

Colour = provides clues to how other people view you
Animal = provides clues to how you view yourself
Place = provides a portrait of what qualities you appreciate in others

So, in my example, other people see me as cool (chuckle, chuckle), quiet (if you only knew what a shrinking violet I am) and peaceful (hee, hee, sure while I'm asleep). Go around the room asking people to introduce themselves and tell the group either their favourite colour, animal or place and their descriptive words.

This activity can be very humourous and fun!
