A

Active transportation refers to cycling, walking, jogging, in-line skating, skateboarding, skiing, and skating.

Aggressive driving is characterized by a series of aggressive and/or reckless and unlawful acts that create dangerous situations on the road.

Alcohol is a depressant that can impair balance, coordination and motor skills, impair judgement, and impact your friends, family and other aspects of your life.

Alternative fuel is any material or substance, other than petroleum, which is consumed to provide energy to power an engine. Alternative fuels are cleaner fuels, so they do not put as much pollution into the air and reduce emissions.

B

Back road driving refers to driving on naturally created surfaces such as mud, sand, gravel, and snow.

Blood Alcohol Concentration (B.A.C.). The factors that determine Blood Alcohol Concentration include a person's weight, metabolic rate and emotional state and the quantity of alcohol consumed over a certain time period. In Canada, the criminal code intoxication level is at least 80 mg per 100 ml of blood.

Canada Safety Council is a national, non-government, charitable organization dedicated to safety. Our mission is to lead in the national effort to reduce preventable deaths, injuries and economic loss in public and private places throughout Canada. We serve as a credible, reliable resource for safety information, education and awareness in all aspects of Canadian life - in traffic, at home, at work and at leisure.

Circle check refers to a safe driving practice performed before backing up. When doing a circle check, you will take a walk around your vehicle to ensure there are no obstacles hiding in your blind spots. Always be sure your way is clear before you begin backing up.

D

Defensive driving is driving to prevent collisions in spite of the actions of others and the conditions around you. Defensive driving is a skill you master through study, training, practice and above all else - consistent application.

E

EnerGuide. This label indicates the vehicle's fuel consumption rating and estimated annual fuel costs.

Eye-lead time. Vision is your first line of defence when driving. Eye-lead time allows you to anticipate hazards so that you can react before they turn into collisions. The technique is straightforward and extremely effective:

  • Keep your eyes moving to the front, to the sides, and behind BUT be sure to focus for at least a fraction of a second in each direction to register essential information.
  • When driving in urban areas, scan the road 12 to 15 seconds ahead - approximately the distance of one city block.
  • When driving on the highway, use 20 to 30 seconds eye-lead time (or as far as your eye can see).
  • Check the rear of your vehicle every 3 to 5 seconds using your rear and side-view mirrors.

Following distance is the minimum distance you should leave between you and the car you are following. It is calculated using the Time-Interval Formula.

Four Point Intersection Plan. Know, Show, Slow, Go

Four R's. Read the road ahead, Reduce speed, Ride to the right, Ride right onto the shoulder.

Frostbite is a harmful reaction to cold exposure that can permanently damage its victims. A loss of feeling and a white or pale appearance in fingers, toes, or nose and ear lobes are symptoms of frostbite.

G

Greenhouse gases (GHG). These gases act much like the glass in a greenhouse as they trap heat and warm the atmosphere. Without these gases, heat would escape from the atmosphere and the average temperature of the Earth would drop from 15ºC to -18ºC! While GHGs are naturally occurring and make life possible, a serious concern today is the enhanced effect on the climate system of increased levels of some GHGs in the atmosphere, due mainly to human activities. The three main GHGs that are linked to human activities are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.

H

Hybrid vehicle is a vehicle that uses a combination of high-power batteries and a conventional internal combustion engine. In a hybrid vehicle, no extra battery charger is required and the overall GHG emission is low.

Hydroplaning is riding on a thin layer of water when there is water on the road. Too much speed and not enough tire tread or pressure reduces contact with the road and affects steering and braking.

Hypothermia is a condition brought on when the body temperature drops to less than 32ºC (90ºF).

Idling refers to keeping a vehicle engine running without actually moving the vehicle. Idling endangers the environment and contributes to asthma, allergies and respiratory disease. Idling unnecessarily is one of the worst driving habits shared by Canadian drivers.

P

Passive transportation includes carpooling and vanpooling, public transit, and working from home.

Preventable collision is one in which you failed to do everything reasonable to prevent it. "Reasonable" means being willing to consistently apply all of the principles of defensive driving.

Preventative maintenance is the practice of maintaining and servicing your vehicle before parts become worn out and the vehicle becomes unusable. Preventative maintenance can be done at convenient times and has predictable and manageable costs.

Q

R

Road rage can be defined as random acts of violence or aggressive behaviour carried out by frustrated or over-stressed drivers. Drivers who experience road rage usually have emotional and behavioural difficulties that stem from other issues.

S

Speeding refers to driving above the legal speed limit. Speeding leads to heavy braking and aggressive acceleration.

Standard Accident Prevention Formula. Recognize the hazard >> Understand the defence >> Act in time.

Time-Interval Formula requires you to allow a minimum amount of time when following another vehicle. Under normal conditions, most passenger vehicles should allow three seconds between their vehicle and the vehicle in front.

Total Stopping Distance is the distance travelled from the point you perceive a need to stop to the point where your vehicle comes to a halt.
